Jackalope
By Abigail Cain
The early morning jackalope knows
some rabbits have
needles for teeth. Some
rabbits chew on their own
fur / leave their piss in your
potted plants in the yard /
and lap the naked spots they
left for themselves.
The early morning jackalope tells
tales from the
deer in the mountains / the
ones that buck their
feet against the bark of trees /
to build small crooks for the
woodpecker to feast / for
bugs to crawl from holes and
eat their own carrion in the
dawn of the newest
day.
He knows /
his buck teeth
gnaw on his lips.
The silly jack rabbit /
the thing with the antlers.
